Mosquito Rolls Out a Wildfire Awareness Program Pairing Physical and Digital Alerts

Mosquito Fire Protection District and the Mosquito Fire Safe Council will host a Readiness Rollout Partnership Launch to unveil a red flag awareness program on Thursday, July 23, at 11:30 a.m. at Mosquito Station 75, 8801 Rock Creek Road, Placerville.

The Readiness Rollout Partnership Launch event will take place immediately before the Mosquito Fire District's Board of Directors' monthly meeting.

This new Red Flag Awareness Program will place highly visible physical warning flags at key locations in the Mosquito community whenever the National Weather Service issues a Red Flag Warning for critical fire weather conditions. These warnings indicate periods of very high wildfire danger, when high temperatures, strong winds, and low humidity can cause fires to start easily and spread rapidly.

The program is especially important for communities like Mosquito, where limited access routes and very high fire hazard severity make evacuations more challenging and time‑sensitive. The banners provide residents with extra advance notice to prepare their households, move important items off the hill, and stay alert when wildfire risk is highest—complementing, not replacing, official emergency alerts.

Residents are strongly encouraged to sign up for El Dorado County’s RAVE emergency alert system at ready.edso.org to receive evacuation warnings and orders by phone, text, and email. While Red Flag days are a key trigger for these new warning banners, there may be times when a wildfire threatens Mosquito without a formal Red Flag Warning in effect, so residents should always remain ready, informed, and aware of current fire conditions.

Partnerships like this between local fire agencies and fire safe councils underscore the importance of coordination in education, outreach, and emergency response. This red-flag awareness program emphasizes pairing physical signs with social media alerts and push notifications to reach all residents. This program also engages volunteers and encourages residents to take action, check with their neighbors, and use the advance notification to prepare and stay aware of wildfire risks.
